Dear Maria,

Great stuff! And great work putting this ezine together! :) Your advise here will really help me in "the project" that I told you about. Yes, it is underway now and I am investing a little of my own money into getting a small infrastructure setup before I try to convince the big guys. :)

UPDATE: Sunday, 9:30 pm:

I spent the evening on the OSGrid forum with tech experts, and was able to get my router configured properly to run OpenSim. The thing that finally did was looking up my computers physical address (MAC address) using the ipconfig/all command in the DOS window. Then going to the router control panel and setting that to a fixed internal IP address that was higher than normal -- normal ones are in the 192.168.1.101-110 range, and I set mine to 200.

Then sending the 9000 port traffic through my router directly to that fixed IP address.

The region is stable, and holding up well. Four people visited at once, and I'll try to hold a "crash" party this week to see how many it would hold. One of my visitors was in a very richly detailed wolf costume. Realistic hair is one of the most difficult things to simulate on this platform. My hair, for example, takes over 200 "primitives" - the basic building blocks of OpenSim objects.

Regions can usually hold between 3,000 and 15,000 primitives total, depending on settings -- including all the flora and fauna, all the buildings, the roads and other construction, and all the other objects that populate a simulated world, like virtual furniture, clothes, and vehicles.

This guy's fur coat was 4,777 primitives all by itself. And my region handled it just fine.

I'm so proud.
