There are some interesting restricted viewers for education already. Rezzable's viewer is a cut down Linden Lab derived viewer which doesn't allow teleport or certain types of inventory item creation in order to guide the experience. The immersive educational institute also has a cut-down viewer for their experimental OpenSim Rocket grid project.

It would be nice to see a common effort emerge for that kind of use, or have such an effort glommed on as a sub-project to one of the existing viewers.

Excellent! I also like the PayPal approach. I think there are very large and real obstacles that come into play if I created a currency on my Reaction Grid grid and allowed for international access. Not a headache I would want. The point you make about PayPal being able to exist without it's own browser is excellent. I am not sure if "micropayments" will work with the fees charged by PayPal. A subscription model would seem to work well for many situations. For $10 a month maybe I get a credit that allows me to shop for x number of items in a store (but this is basically setting up a bank I suppose).

As hypergridding improves and standards developed; travel and commerce will work themselves out. As humans, we do commerce pretty well and I have no doubt that as avatars we will too.

I think that new Second Life accounts have underwear on your avatar, I know my testing alt does and your point is very good about clothes rezzing! Now I used to be mortified when I appeared someplace without my hair, but that no longer bothers me and I embrace it as part of the experience. =) Even becoming accidentally naked no longer panics me, but certainly would cause a stir among middle school kids (whom I had the joy of teaching for a few years!) =D
