You are absolutely right -- I haven't been thinking of Project Wonderland as an enterprise platform. I haven't yet found any corporate case studies for Project Wonderland, only educational pilot projects. There aren't any public social grids. And I don't see any third party vendors - like, say, ReactionGrid with OpenSim -- actively working on commercializing it for enterprise use. It is in theory a great technology, but it needs a bigger community of users, and an ecosystem of content, destinations, and service providers.

The fact that Oracle just laid off all of Sun's Project Wonderland developers is not a good sign, from a business user perspective.

I personally love the idea of a Java-based virtual world, and hope that the project is able to gain traction. I would especially love to see a Web-based viewer for the world. If the viewer also supported other platforms -- like Second Life or OpenSim -- it would be a game-changer.
