I agree with Pam, a completely integrated metaverse UI for desktop computing is the natural next step. There have been a few attempts to make "3D" desktops, but so far they just come across as just the same old 2D desktop with a little bit of eye candy. The move to a 3D computing environment should not be about eye candy, but instead the potential functionality that a 3D environment can provide. I don't think that this will mean window-based application interfaces will be disappearing any time soon, but we are now reaching a point where they can be fluidly integrated into a 3D workflow.

I'd love to see a group of intrepid open source hackers take a whack at creating something like it. As a initial direction I think I would suggest making a Opensim shell for linux, and handling window based UI with something like Moblin's Clutter Library.

Maria
I have been reading your blog for a little while now and continue to thoroughly enjoy the insight and information you provide. I totally agree with your assessment of the path to virtual world ubiquity. Up until now, I don't think I have seen anyone summarize it as well as you did in this post.

One key to adoption does indeed seem to be the bundling of virtual world software in a manner similar to how Microsoft has distributed their packages and suites. I have wondered myself if Microsoft would be willing to devote the resources necessary to develop the software we need. Perhaps creating some spin-off of open sim. They certainly are positioned well to push it out as pre-installed software. But as you point out there is a very real chance some unknown company can come out of nowhere and take over the industry.

I also love your idea about the virtual desktop because I think anyone using VWs for some time starts to realize the experience needs to evolve into an immersion style UI - we, as users, are ready to go to this next step. But because so many people are still focusing on improving today's interface, I am not sure enough resources are being applied to creating a total 3D experience. Anyway, thanks again for an incredibly awesome post!!!
