Joe – Thanks for the fantastic article. My jumping in point was somewhat later than yours at the insistence of a friend, but as soon as I saw the technology I thought to myself, “This is what I thought the internet was going to be like when I first read about it”. I worked my way through all of the technical difficulties, downtime, and general and specific creepiness of SL because I became a believer in the platform. I tried to make believers out of others over the years as well, with limited success. While I agree with most of your thoughts on the subject, I have always been a firm believer in teachers leading the way with technology. If it hadn’t been for several bleeding edge teachers in middle and high school, I would never have developed the interest in computer software that I have today.

Well said, my friend. I unfortunately understood all too well what you went through for these years.

How about embracing the Technology Agnostic Approach?
The U.S. Army Learning Concept 2015 (PDF) does not focus on any particular TECHNOLOGY, but rather focuses on the OPPORTUNITIES presented by dynamic virtual environments, by on-line gaming, and by mobile learning. It speaks of access to applications, the blending of physical and virtual collaborative environments, and learning outcomes.
