If you abstract the concept of buying to one of adoption in general, then this can directly apply to technologies as well. I can’t tell you how much it pains me every time I go to an open-source project site, and it’s clearly only designed for those in the know and not for potential adopters. I’ll lump the Opensimulator.org website in here too so I’m not being coy. A wiki, even a nicely themed wiki, isn’t a good way to win over adopters. Opensim also has the additional challenge of introducing the client-side experience to those who aren’t familiar with how Second Life operates.

If there were a trend I’d like to see Opensim follow as far as web presence goes, something like the trend of well designed, simple, and easy to navigate product sites for open projects such as NodeJS or even Dogecoin. They start off with the basic value proposition then guide the visitor to the next steps to learn more.
