Would people recommend getting this if you are a Second Life content developer or wait until the first consumer version is launched – probably by next summer? This is assuming you are not a 1% and have tons of fun money to spend without thinking. I am torn actually right now between getting one or not.

Once the Oculus Rift officially comes out, will you be planning to sell content to those users? If yes, then getting the DK2 could give you a leg up on the competition.

From what I’ve read so far, being inside a virtual world requires human-sized avatars, accurately-proportioned furniture and buildings, and objects that interact in natural ways. For example, instead of having a hud to control an object, build in a control panel with buttons you can push.

If you have your own Rift, you can find out this stuff for yourself, experiment with it, create unique content.

Another thing you can do is check MeetUp for local VR groups, or visit the OculusVR forums, and find out if there’s anyone local you hook up with. They might be willing to share their Oculus in return for you being a beta tester for their project, or in return for coffee or pizza.

If you have to ask this question, the answer is… YES. Go buy it right now. The wait for CV1 will be absolutely excruciating and you’ll be able to spend that time makin’ stuff.

You’re just making content for Second Life? Does any of it have to do with more than just modeling and such that would require a DK2 to develop for? If not, then you should probably look at it from a consumer perspective- it may still be worth it to buy one, because it is an amazing piece of hardware, but you may also be better off just waiting for the consumer version.

$350? Ouch! I’ll wait for the consumer release, tyvm.
