I don’t know whether this is great marketing or the most evil plot to get people to buy stuff I’ve ever seen. However, China is the place to try this out — they’ve got over 100 VR headset manufacturers, and one of them, Baofeng Mojing, sold 1 million headsets the first three months of the year alone. Plus, Baofeng has 20,000 physical retail outlets selling headsets. And that’s just one of the companies — most, if not all, of the big Chinese media, online, and retail brands are getting into the space, one way or the other, and the government is pushing for it, and investment dollars are flowing in like crazy. And because the headsets are so cheap — and everyone already has a smartphone — they offer users the ability to watch movies in private on a big screen (the killer app right now for mobile VR) and interactive apps and games are just icing on the cake.
