Well parts of that sound cool. But still color me disappointed. I think we can find something a lot more unique than this. We already have video watching opaque goggles with headphones. As far as immersive 3D goes, that will be great. However today 3D versions of popular movies with a few exceptions (e.g. Avatar), are just not very convincing. In The Force Awakens the viewpoint of the 3D was very pathetic. Too close and not with realistic presence at all.
Now with film so full of CGI it is possible we get real 3D virtual sets that would give a much greater sense of presence. But my instinct is that you don’t pour the new wine into old bottles like this. We need something unique to VR to push it over the top. I think that will have more to do with actual 3D telepresence apps than with watching movies with a fancy rig.
It’s not about 3D movies — they’re barely a blip on the radar, when it comes to VR. It’s about immersive movies, where you do feel that you’re right in the middle of things.
It’s hard to explain the difference between the two in words. If you get a chance to grab a Cardboard set or a Gear VR and try it out, do that. It really does feel that you are actually in the middle of the movie, like a character in the world. It’s pretty cool.
