Thank you for the coverage and feedback Maria. I’d like to address some of the issues you’ve raised.

There is significantly more commerce activity in Kitely Market than there is inworld in most OpenSim grids combined so driving people to where they are more likely to actually end up buying items makes more business sense than sending them to an inworld destination. While you are familiar with Kitely Market many people who arrive at the Kitely Welcome Center are not. Those ads of great looking items you mentioned are therefore quite useful for driving shoppers to where they can buy what they want and driving merchants to where they can make money selling it.

There are volunteers who greet people in the new Kitely Welcome Center but we’ve yet to reach 24/7 coverage. I agree some people’s first impressions will be better once we attain that goal.

We plan to eventually add dynamic signs that include the information that is presented in our viewer login page: https://www.kitely.com/virtual-world-news/2016/07/04/events-system-and-other-improvements/ . That said, any new Kitely user who logs into our grid already sees events, destinations, new forums posts and new items in Kitely Market even before they go inworld. So, I agree, it’s important to add that information to the Kitely Welcome Center, which we will do, but people are already presented with this information every time they log into the Kitely grid via our viewer login page.

There are weekly Kitely Community meetings held in the meeting area you mentioned. It was designed to accommodate those events and not for just hanging out. That said, you can often visit the Kitely Welcome Center and find greeters sitting on the stone benches around the fountain in the landing area, chatting to other Kitely users or people who have just arrived. There is also a stadium in the new Kitely Welcome Center which will be eventually used for performances.

I agree that the signs in the information area could be made more attractive using various appropriate graphics but those signs do provide the information we found was important for converting first time visitors to our grid to active users. In other words, just as you’ve mentioned in the begging of your article, they serve the function they are intended for while not being visually appealing. This can, and will, be improved over time.
