Two more grids (OpenNeuland, WilderWesten) have adopted OMC as their currency. This brings the current number of regions running the OpenSim module to 340.

The thing about being able to still objects is certainly true iff there is not a unified inventory and IP model. Just because I hypergrid to X should not mean that X or its local god[s] have any more privileges over my inventory than any other user does in my home grid. The only way I know to enforce this is practice is with some kind of validated permission data. But that implies validation logic in an immutable binary only module. Perhaps the problem could be partially addressed by something like a certification of avatar identity by external site and signed permission based on this identity? *scratches head* Security is hard, lets go build something. :)

That would stop a determined cloner from making copies of course. This is a discussion on the entire family of OpenSim grids and SL as well. It is not a hypergrid only discussion. The impossibility of ridding even SL of something like copybot is a known issue. However, there are things that can be done to insure your inventory does not get messed up.

Hello,
I am Gibs from Virtual RP. We are creating a new grid based on Opensim. Our grid are not open because we wait to finish website, marketplace and money module.
We decided to install Virvox module to test money. It seems correct to use. I just saw a bug that need to be fix. When you TP, sometimes virvox module loose money information on the viewer. And when you engaged a new TP, money is ok on your viewer. The module is young and promise great things for opengrid.
Virtual RP is created by Froggy french team and help by some SL brands to build sims and items.
We hope open our grid on April.

plain and simple: Linden Lab's "Second Life" has 70000 online users at any given moment. Second Life has an economy. Second Life has Linden Lab.

Open Sim (which is also Linden Lab) is not Linden Lab's Second Life.

Here's an analogy:

Second Life is to Open Sim as Facebook is to a Ning group.

i don't know how to explain it any better than that.

Now that SL has media available on any prim building a 3D CMS is much easier. Every prim you like can have a different view of information or a different "slice" in a multi-dimensional data/information space. Which slice is active can depend on avatar orientation and avatar spoken commands. Filters and slice activation and blending on demand. WAY COOL. I can't wait to build my media room with all surfaces media displays from external feeds and graphics generating programs. It should literally be possible to build a denser information environment in any VW supporting 3D on prim than can be built in the real world. Very exciting!

Snoopy --

Fantastic! Where can we go to see this in action? Also, does this use PayPal or PayPal Micropayments -- or is this up to individual merchants? And does it do anything with the balance at the top right of the browser screen? (Not that PayPal requires a balance -- you can pay by credit card without even having a PayPal account..)

Thanks!

The Mod-PayPal module implements PayPal support for OpenSim. It was developed by Adam Frisby and me. During the last months it was successfully tested on some of the regions that my company Dreamland Metaverse hosts for it's customers (http://www.3dmetaverse.com/).

It implements user-to-user payments, user-to-object payments, as well as object and land purchases, using the standard viewer functionality and money LSL functions and event. The only LSL function not supported is llGiveMoney. All financtial transactions are in US$ cents (OS$ 100 = US$ 1.00) and go through PayPal and are authorized on the secure PayPal web site.

This optional money module can be used for standalone regions and regions running as part of a grid like OSGrid. It is fully implemented within the region server and does not need any additional functionailty at grid level. The Mod-PayPal module needs to be added to the OpenSim source code as optional module before compiling OpenSim.

Another VW disappears. How sad. I am not a member of There but my heart goes out to those members who are losing so much with it's closing. I am a member of several worlds, and I can't imagine what it would be like losing the place where I gather with friends.

I don't know if this will help and of you users, but I found an article on There alternatives. You can get to it by clicking my name.

Best of luck to all the There members and staff. It was a good run.

While working at IBM our team (folks like Peter Finn, Karen Keeter, Craig Becker, Ian Hughes and the like--early adopters) created a Guidelines document that was a supplement to the Corporate Guidelines. It addressed many(not all) of the compliance issues that were not previously covered in other guidelines, like IBM's Business Conduct Guidelines. It's a public document that is available to anyone with interest. I'm certain one of the IBMers could make the link available as I no longer see it on the corporate website. It's a good piece of work with alot of thought for the various types of virtual environments and potential issues with prevention of issues at the core of the guidance.

Great piece, Maria! Very Informative too (Europe is ahead on this one). Open universal virtual currencies allow for two-way exchange, P2P transactions, and convertibility to real-world currencies. They also have the possibility to change the dynamics of game adoption by users because the currency unit will drive the user gaming/world decision. I believe that the next step in the evolution of virtual and nonpolitical digital currencies is the ability to have anonymous, negotiable digital bearer certificates backed by precious metals. That way, they won't simply exist on a ledger but they can be privately accumulated and negotiated, rarely being exchanged for governmental currency units.
