Unity Reaches One Million Registered Developers

Press Release: Unity Reaches One Million Registered Developers

SAN FRANCISCO, CA–(Marketwire – Apr 9, 2012) – Unity Technologies, provider of the Unity multi-platform engine and development tools, is thrilled to announce that the Unity engine and tools now has over 1 million registered developers and over 6 million total downloads.

The massive number of developers using Unity has grown exponentially over the last two years. At the end of 2010, 250,000 developers had downloaded and registered their unique copies of Unity and only a year later that number had grown to 750,000. Now at the 1 million mark, Unity has seen a quarter of its community register in the last three months and expects continued rapid growth as it expands in popularity across Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe.

ReactionGrid's Jibe is one of several immersive environments built on the Unity 3D platform. Others include Unifier from Second Places, HostAVirtualEvent.com, and Designing Digitally's 3D Virtual Campus Tours.

The monthly active developer base has also grown to nearly 300,000, or 30% of all developers who ever registered with Unity, who put in a total of 2.5 million hours of creative work in the last month. According to statistics recorded by Evans Data in their Developer Population and Demographic Study 2011 v. 2, this means nearly 2% of the over 16 million active worldwide software developers (of any kind) are currently using Unity to develop their projects.

“When we released Unity 1.0 back in 2005, we didn’t even dream numbers like that, but simply started by trying to be a great tool for the few hundred customers who adopted Unity,” said David Helgason, CEO of Unity Technologies. “That goal remains the same, as we now use our incredible momentum to improve our products and extend our reach. We are only just getting started!”

Developers making games, simulations and training apps, visualization and art installations, and other wonderful products across studios ranging from the tiniest indie boutiques to the world’s largest publisher owned development houses have all taken part in the journey to the million, and demonstrate the diversity of the community and breadth of content capable of being created with Unity.

Recent developments such as the collaboration with Adobe to release a robust Flash deployment add-on and the limited time offer to provide Unity iOS and Unity Android Basic for free, power a continued explosion in the adoption of Unity across all burgeoning electronic entertainment and application markets.

Mirroring the growth of the Unity development platform is the Unity Web Player which had reached an impressive 125 million installs. The install rate of the Web Player also continues to grow and now reaches over 5 million new computers each month with all indication that this rate will continue to rise.
