The New York Times Virtual Reality app won the Mobile Grand Prix at Cannes Wednesday night.
The newspaper has given away 1.3 million free Google VR headsets to subscribers to the Times’ Sunday edition since last November. Around 500,000 then downloaded the NYT app for Android or iOS, which generated a total of 1.5 million content views, according to the newspaper.
Content included The Displaced, a virtual reality film about children uprooted by war,  created in collaboration with Chris Milk and his virtual reality company Vrse, since renamed Within.
Other films were sponsored by GE and MINI. GE’s film, “Nature is Inspiring our Industrial Future,†was shortlisted for Mobile Lions in the “virtual reality experience†category.
